The matchboxes are a small canvas to work on.
I have a collection of various colours of tissue paper which might be suitable for my ideas and may help me to achieve any muted tones and textures I might use.
I also have a collection of old road maps form around France and Britain which I may use in a similar style to Kit Davey. I find maps beautiful and despite showing real places, sizes and scales I find that they still allow room for imagination to flourish.
I have also collected various other bits of materials like sweet wrappers which create interesting hues when combined together or with other materials. Using the materials in this way will give me scope for experimentation as I do not know what combinations will work best.
I will continue to collect interesting papers and textures which will help me to create new and unusual combinations.
After collecting some materials I started to paint over some empty matchboxes with white acrylic paint to cover any cardboard that was showing giving a blank white box to work with.
Inspired by Kit Davey's matchbox worlds, I created a tiny book titled Escape Plan which will fit inside the matchbox. I will add text and tiny images to the book to evoke feelings and memories and to test the proof of concept.
I used a small stamping kit I bought from the high street store Tiger at Christmas which I couldn't wait to use.
I also got to work selecting map elements and some images I found in newspapers to create some interesting backgrounds. I will expand my image collection and maybe take this concept further by using the images to create Decoupage effects to adorn the boxes.
This is my first rough effort and already I can see how this might look. By emulating Kit Davey's work it allows me to figure out what processes work and what doesn't. I can then evolve my own concepts and ideas to help me create unique pieces.
I have to cover the actual outer box but I will collect more materials to see what I can come up with. The process seems to evolve the more I create.
