Kit Davey makes playful art using paper, print and photos to create cards and matchbox worlds. She uses everything from old photos to natural materials like leaves or moss. Some of her matchbox art uses old maps or technical diagrams which i find compelling and invite you into an imaginative world.
When looking at her work, there is usually a word printed on the piece somewhere. What I like about this is that word can be evocative and trigger memories which when used in combination with the old maps or diagrams create a powerful visual piece in such a small space.
The matchboxes are often wrapped in paper and the map or photo is wrapped around the outer box and again on the inner box leaving the walls blank. This leaves the inside space for the main image which are rendered using a variety of techniques to create these small intimate scenes. Sometimes the paper is folded to create a small object or natural materials are used to create a nest for example.
I like these unusual and thought provoking little keepsakes and I believe these techniques could be used for my own matchbox art project, especially as it uses often discarded or leftover materials.
These techniques are taken a step further with her book art where small books are created by collecting together mismatched pieces of text, diagrams, illustrations and photos to create unusual but often beautiful pieces.
"Paper is my foundation. Each page has carefully
selected papers culled from my substantial stash of dictionary pages,
images from vintage books, music scores, letters, ephemera, card stock,
rice papers, scrap booking paper, maps, wrapping paper, craft paper,
grocery bags, used envelops, magazine pages, textbooks, tissue papers,
printed napkins, calendars, posters. When I finish a book I save all the
little pieces in a bag called “Bits.” Even the tiniest piece of paper
has potential to become part of my art." Kit Davey
Kit Davey's visual style is something I admire and I like it because there is a playful charm to her art, which resonates with me and my style. I particularly like the use of different types of paper like old maps and pictures. I like the depth that is created within the tiny spaces by using different layers of paper.
